The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers. Romantic, unique, and beautiful all describe the city of Venice, or Venezia in Italian - an engineering wonder, it is one of Italy's most popular tourist attractions and is also known as the "Queen of the Adriatic" and "La Serenissima". While its canals are a huge attraction for travelers who are curious to visit and experience a city that is mostly connected by waterways and bridges, it is also renown for its Venetian glass, lace, art, carnival masks, churches, palaces and public squares.
Venice city is located in northeastern Italy in the Veneto region, Venice is actually comprised of approximately 118 islands in the Adriatic Sea. It is sourthwest of Trieste, east (actually slightly southeast) of Milan and north of the Republic of San Marino.
Venice commonly called as "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "The Floating City", and "City of Canals". Venice is famous for its water transportation system. People here commute by water and the boats in which they commute are called Gondolas. Venice become the only city in Europe who do not have transportation-shaped car / motorcycle.
Interesting thing in venice is Grand Canal and Piazza San Marco. The Grand Canal is Venice's main artery, in Grand canal you can ride along the canal with boat to view the magnificent facades of some of the city's most beautiful buildings. One of the best ways to see the canal, and Venice, is to take a water taxi (vaporetto). While Piazza San Marco (Saint Mark's Square) is a must-see, as it is where you'll find Saint Mark's Basilica as well as sidewalk cafes where you can rest and take advantage of the photo ops of both the architecture and the sea. The other activities that you can do in Venice are are walking across the Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto), which is the Grand Canal's main bridge, and taking a stroll along the Riva degli Schiavoni, which will lead you to the Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri).
